Antioxidant and dioxygenase cofactor

  • Water-soluble antioxidant (vitamin C) that supports cellular redox balance.
  • Cofactor for iron-dependent dioxygenases, supporting DNA and histone demethylation and collagen hydroxylation.
  • Applied in oxidative stress, epigenetic and reprogramming studies, and in models of collagen and matrix formation.

Supporting Publications

Young et al. (2015), Annu Rev Nutr

  • Reviews ascorbate as a cofactor for TET dioxygenases and JmjC histone demethylases, linking cellular redox status to DNA and histone demethylation.

Esteban et al. (2010), Cell Stem Cell

  • Shows vitamin C improves the speed and efficiency of mouse and human iPSC generation, in part by alleviating senescence, and promotes the transition of pre-iPSCs to a fully reprogrammed state.

Blaschke et al. (2013), Nature

  • In mouse ES cells, vitamin C boosted Tet activity, rapidly raising 5hmC and driving DNA demethylation and a blastocyst-like state. Other antioxidants had no effect, and the response was lost in Tet1/Tet2-deficient cells.
